Ah summer is almost here, I can feel it…no literally I can feel it! It’s May and it’s 93 degrees here already in Dallas. As it is my first summer here I am in for a real treat! But fret not, I have a plan. To only eat and drink cold things…yea right like I am going to cut out my bulletproof coffee…oh wait, they have those in cold brew individual size as well…SCORE!
Seriously though, I am thinking about eating nothing but salads and cold food throughout the summer – stay tuned on my recipes. I have already started with a delicious “smart” salad I whipped up. What I like about this salad is that not only was it tasty (and of course cold) but jam packed with nutrients and supplements needed to nourish my body as well as energy to keep me going throughout the day.
So you ask, why do I call it a “smart” salad. Aside from salads being a smarter choice to a meal, that is not the reason why I called it “smart”. I use a special oil called brain octane which I will get into in just a moment. In addition to the brain octane, I use ingredients that do not cause inflammation and are essentially good for the digestion as well as your immune system
Each ingredient serves a purpose in my health and well-being both physically and mentally. What I liked most about this salad is I mixed fruits, proteins and vegetables and good fats all in one.
What’s in the “Smart” Salad?
I started with organic spinach which is high in beta-carotene (great for eyesight) as well as magnesium, zinc, iron, calcium, niacin, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin C. There is a plethora of benefits to spinach, and instead of going into detail about each one you can read more here.
Next I use organic strawberries – organic because they are one of the dirty dozen which are high in pesticides. Did you know that some of the benefits of strawberries are improved eye care and brain function? In addition they improve the immune system, preventing certain types of cancer as well as slow down the aging process.
Another beneficial ingredient is red onion. Yes, even red onions have benefits such as reducing inflammation, regulate blood sugar, and also help improve immunity. These sweet little suckers also are good for the heart as they lower the production of bad cholesterol.
For the protein I added sugar free turkey bacon which is Paleo approved. That is the main benefit but it also comes with promoting the nerve function as well. You can substitute it with sugar free bacon made with pork, I just chose turkey as my bacon source for now.
Topping the salad I put hemp seeds. No, it is not weed, but is from the same plant. You see hemp seeds or hearts are the seeds of the hemp plant, or Cannabis sativa. Although marijuana comes from the same plant, hemp seeds only contain a trace amount of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, and they will not get you high. In fact, hemp seeds are safe and very healthy to eat. Hemp seeds are rich in GLA which smooth muscles, control inflammation and body temperature and is also necessary for proper hormone function. Other benefits are that it helps relieve joint pain and arthritis. Aids in weight loss, digestive health and is great for the hair, skin and nails. Now smoke on that!!! Ok, just kidding.
Next is my favorite fat, avocado. YUM!! I have put avocado in everything including shakes AND now margarita – that recipe will be up soon, check back. For now, I cut up half avocado because everyone knows that avocados contain more potassium than bananas, which is why I switched to putting them in my protein shake in place of bananas. They can lower cholesterol and maintain a healthy blood sugar level. All these and a plethora of other benefits is why this is my go to fruit.
Last I add a little Pink Himalayan Sea Salt, lemon juice and also use brain octane oil mixed with olive oil. What is Brain Octane oil? It is oil derived from coconuts that helps body burn fat and uses the fat as a quicker source of energy, not sugar. It leaves you more focused and with more brain power with lasting energy. I highly recommend Brain Octane oil in your coffee and also in salads such as this “smart” salad.
And there you have it! “Smart” Salad for the summer…ENJOY!
